In today’s gospel, Jesus directs our attention to the font of baptism. By water and the word, the Holy Spirit gives us new birth. Freely, out of love, we are made sons and daughters of God, brothers and sisters of the Lord Jesus, messengers of the Holy Spirit. From the waters of baptism we rise as a people blessed by God. From the liturgy we are sent forth into the world, not to condemn but to offer mercy.

Today we remember Gregory the Great, Bishop of Rome, who died in 604. He established a lectionary and prayers, a school to train church musicians and sent missionaries to England.

Sundays and Seasons

Prayer of the Day

O God, our leader and guide, in the waters of baptism you bring us to new birth to live as your children. Strengthen our faith in your promises, that by your Spirit we may lift up your life to all the world through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

Festivals and Commemorations this week:

(The Church remembers the faithful on the date they died rather than the date they were born. In this way, we celebrate their eternal life with us and with the Lord. A “c” before the date means “about.” That is, the exact date is not known.)
